Everyone knows about the Photoshop editing software and we are not going to discuss about the Photoshop today rather we will discuss about other editing software that are comparatively same and does the work like Photoshop. Removing background might not be as easy as the designers do, but still you can try to improve yourself and know how it actually works. Knowing about things isn’t bad; it helps everywhere you go even if you are not going to edit by yourself but you can guide others how it shall be done. There are less complex, lower cost and more precisely workable software available.

Mac Preview

Preview is the best application for the Mac OS X, it is mainly used to open images and PDFs. Mac users can easily get the access to this software to edit images and it also has the feature to remove or add background where it is needed. Inside the program there is a tool for the background removal, markup toolbar contains select down menu where the image background can be found. The first option should be the ‘Smart Lasso’ tool; this tool allows you to draw the line along the object. Then lines help the application to understand the object and the background and then it selects the object.

It also has the ‘instant alpha’ tool, you can find it from the markup toolbar (icon looks like a magic wand) select and drag the background you need. After this the image will start changing colors. Once it is completed then by using the delete key in the keyboard or in the application to remove the background. Instant alpha chooses also the objects that are the same in the color of the selection. But to edit and remove the background it is the fastest.

Though Preview doesn’t have that extra features and tools like Photoshop still it is the best for editing small edits when you are running out of time. And if you are a Mac user then you can easily have the access to the other feature that you may need.

Paint Net

If you are not a Mac user and you can’t have the access of Preview, then don’t worry for windows Paint Net is here. It is available online as a free download and has good standard tools to have the background removal. Get your image selected, go to the toolbar and choose the ‘Magic Wand’ tool and then click on the background, it will automatically select the subject and outline it. It can often select some of the parts of the object, when it does this you can avoid it by adjusting tolerance until the background gets selected. You might select the background more than once or twice until the tolerance is done. If your background color isn’t constant then you can select and delete the background as many times you like. Once you have done altering the most of the background, zoom in to see the little background left in the picture, if left you can remove them by using the eraser tool. After selecting and deleting the background you are ready to save the file. Make sure you are saving as PNG file, JPEG can make you lose the transparency.

GIMP

This is another open source where you can edit anytime you want. It is available for both Windows and Mac. It is more powerful than the other application we discussed previously. You can say it is the clone of Photoshop because they are apparently similar. They actually have the similar properties and working tools. You may check it out whenever you have not accessed to Photoshop.   

Select the image you require, and then go to ‘Layer Transparency’ add the Alpha channel to edit the transparent background.  This will automatically delete the background. And after that select the background you need or create it with the app by using the ‘Fuzzy select ‘tool. To adjust the background according to the image the current background is needed. When the background is selected and added then save the file. You may need to erase the edges of the image just to get the perfections; some edges may have left over because fuzzy select tool often misses the small edges. Then save the image as PNG file.

For all the application size may vary, and if you need to resize then you have to do it manually, some may have the automatic option, and if it has any then that would be easy for you or else you have to do it manually. These all application will help you out and if you are not an expert on Photoshop. And if you have expertise in Photoshop then you can simply use it. Manually it can be used, automatic options are not there.
